Lasse Vibe has apologised after his first red card in a competitive game – but the Brentford striker admits he is still stunned by it.

The Dane fell victim to the new FA clampdown on dissent, one of two soft bookings which saw him sent off in the latter stages against Sheffield Wednesday at Griffin Park.

That brought the numbers level again after David Jones had also seen red for the visitors, and they went on to snatch an injury-time equaliser.

Vibe said: “I have said sorry to the boys. I've been sent off in a friendly before, but that was the first in a competitive game. It's not really me, and I'm still shocked to be honest.

“The first booking was soft as well, but the ref's got to do what he's got to do. He said I threw an arm at him – he said he didn't want to, but he has to give it.”

Celebrate: Lasse Vibe

Vibe received his marching orders not much more than half an hour after giving them the lead, when he closed down Wednesday keeper Keiren Westwood and watched in delight as the ball rebounded into the net.

He said: “We were saying at the break we wanted to press them a bit higher and we were doing that from the first second of then second half.

“I pressed the keeper probably a thousand times last year, sometimes you get a goal from it and sometimes you don't. I think I got one or two goals from it last year.

“When he took his touch it was like he was waiting for me to come at him. Most of the time, stikers give the keeper half a yard, but I kept going and was lucky enough to get the deflection in the right direction.

“They were the better team in the first half but we have a skilled keeper who kept us in it. We came out on front foot for the second half and opened up the game into a 50-50, but then invited too much pressure late on.”
