Marcus Bettinelli and Matt Smith both face an extended spell on the sidelines with knee injuries after their clash on Wednesday night, Kit Symons has confirmed.

The pair both suffered medial cruciate ligament damage with Smith expected to be out for at least four to six weeks.

It is unclear how much longer Bettinelli will be out for as the club await specialist advice as it seems he has damaged another ligament in his knee.

Despite the injury to the goalkeeper, Symons doesn't feel the need to bring in a new number one and highlighted his faith in Andy Lonergan who started the season opener against Cardiff City.

“They've both got knee ligament damage to their MCL. Matt's is less severe, while we await specialist advice on Marcus has also damaged another ligament,” the Whites boss said.

Out: Matt Smith

“Loners came off the bench on Wednesday night and I'm very happy, actually delighted with how he’s done during the pre-season.

“We’ve got young Jesse Joronen who played (for the under-21s) against Arsenal last Friday, he had a really good game but that was his first game in a long time, so quality wise we’ve got no problems with Jesse.

“We may well look to strengthen and bring in someone else but I'm delighted with Loners and more than happy for him to be playing.”

The Fulham boss refused to rule out any late loan moves for a forward to fill in for Smith until he regains fitness, highlighting that his injury leaves them with just Ross McCormack and youngsters Moussa Dembele and Cauley Woodrow to fill in.

Leading the line: Ross McCormack

Symons has confidence in both Dembele and Woodrow but their inexperience may mean another forward is brought in to bolster the squad.

Both Scott Parker and Fernando Amorebieta are close to rejoining training after long term injuries while George Williams is back in light training.

New boy Tim Ream isn't quite ready for the Huddersfield game after a long summer playing for the USA in the Gold Cup but is likely to feature either on Tuesday in the cup or next weekend against Rotherham.
