Kensington kids star in top French tournament

K&C show they Cannes do it

Boys own: K&C take third in France

Kensington & Chelsea’s French connection was style itself at the International Cannes Football Competition this week.

A team of budding young footballers from the Royal Borough came third in a tough tournament - and for Ashburnham School student Boubacar Stanley it got even better - he was named the tournament’s best player.

The 11 youngsters stormed to a 2-0 victory in a play-off match against FC Carros, thanks to goal scorers Neo Eccleston and Sonny Pitt.

During the two-day tournament, hosted by A.S. Cannes, the team won each of its four group games before progressing to the semi-finals where they drew 1-1 against Frejus St Raphael thanks to another fabulous goal by Neo.

Unfortunately, a penalty shoot-out meant they narrowly missed out on a place in the final.

Mohammed Jama, Epic’s Youth Sports Co-ordinator who organised the team, said: “The team performed incredibly well in front of an international audience and we are extremely proud of them.

“Big congratulations go to Boubacar for being named footballer of the tournament, which is a fantastic achievement, as was the performance of the whole team, especially our fantastic goal scorers."

The Royal Borough has been taking part in the elite European tournament for the past 15 years, as a result of its twin town status with Cannes.
