Jose Mourinho raged at outside influences which he blamed for Chelsea’s first defeat of the season at Newcastle United.
The red card and a host of substitutions led to the fourth official signalling six minutes of stoppage time at St James’ Park.
But that wasn’t enough for Blues boss Mourinho and the Special One complained his team couldn’t win the game because they couldn’t get hold of the ball.
"I think the six minutes (stoppage time) could have been 20," Mourinho said in an interview with the BBC. "Things that were happening outside the four lines are things that the referee cannot control.
"He cannot punish the ball boy that disappears, he cannot punish the people in the crowd who keep the ball, he cannot punish the person who throws the ball so we have two balls on the pitch at the same time.
"One thing is to waste time on the pitch, the proper way, you keep the ball, you go the corner, you hold the ball, win a free kick, the goalkeeper doesn't run to get the ball, but it's another thing when it happens outside the four lines.
"I think that in high level football it wouldn't happen, but it happens."
Unlike Mourinho, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew felt that six minutes of added time was too much and reckoned his side had beaten the best team in European football.
"I was very disappointed with the six minutes,” Pardew told BT Sport. Talk about Fergie time - that was definitely Mourinho time.
"They are a consistently great side and they will take some stopping to win the league but today is our day and we really enjoyed it."
