QPR fans should be pleased young players are coming into the first team, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has insisted.

Oladmide Shodipo and Osman Kakay both started for Rangers in their 2-1 win over Rochdale in the EFL Cup.

Both of those impressed, while Reece Grego-Cox, Brandon Comley and Chris Paul were also on the QPR bench.

Hasselbaink said: “It was good to see the two young boys coming through and holding their own. We had a few others on the bench.

“We need to calm down and give them time – they did very well today. Mide did very well. Kakay was very tired.

“It was unfortunate I had to change Nasser as I'd have given Mide 75 minutes as I was risking him getting injured at the moment.”

Rangers fans have been pining to see young players come through the ranks to the first team and, now there are some around the squad, Hasselbaink asked the supporters to give them encouragement and love.

He added: “I hope the QPR fans are pleased to see youngsters coming through. They need encouragement.

“They've been asking for home grown talent and now we have a couple, the fans need to embrace them, give them time and love and we can do a lot better.”
