Brentford boss Mark Warburton was unhappy with referee Eddie Ilderton's handling of a first-half penalty incident that denied his side a chance to claim victory at Sheffield United.

The man in the middle caused controversy 10 minutes before the break when he awarded the Bees a spot-kick after Kieron Freeman tackled Marcello Trotta in the box.

Ilderton showed the Blades man a straight red card, although he clearly got a touch on the ball, but reversed his decision and gave a drop-ball after consulting his assistant Mark Dwyer.

"I've never seen that before in my life," said Warburton afterwards. "The obvious thing to do is to go over and speak to your colleagues and then make your decision.

"You brandish a red card and then point to the penalty spot, then suddenly you give a drop-ball. It's very bizarre.

"I haven't seen the incident again, but my first impression was it was a good tackle. "

Brentford dominated for long spells but failed to take their chances as the game ended goalless at Bramall Lane.

"I thought we were very good," Warburton added. "We started on the front foot and they were shocked at the intensity of our play.

"We moved it really well. We came in at half time disappointed we were not ahead, and for half an hour of the second we completely bossed it.

"We were camped in their half and looked like the home team. Any neutral who was watching that came would say it was travesty if we had lost."
