I hoped at least one of the teams would stay up last season.

After all, this was the team I've supported all my life and the team from my constituency and adopted home.

Although Hull and QPR donated three points to each other last season, both crashed out of the Premiership.

The most remarkable thing about Saturday’s match was the absence of incident.

In last season's opening game (see above gallery), Charlie Austin missed a penalty and Hull's new signing, Robert Snodgrass suffered an injury that has sidelined ever since.

In the return game at the KC, Joey Barton was sent off for a jab to Huddlestone's stomach (gallery below).

This game had no penalties, no injuries, no sending offs, no yellow cards, indeed nothing at all that the ref needed to get involved in.

The Rs were impressive and should have won the match but for an amazing miss by Tjaronn Chery. Matt Phillips's cross left the Dutchman with a simple tap in which he managed to sky.

Glaring miss: Tjaronn Chery (R)

Rangers took the lead through Austin who, for me, tied as man of the match with Gabriele Angella whose bandaged head was constantly first to the ball in Rangers’ back four.

The thing that impresses me most about Charlie is his work ethic. Far from simply leading the line he grafts away in defence and midfield. He even produced a back heel worthy of Adel Tarrabt in his pomp.

Warrior: Gabriele Angella

Hull were on a high after their win at Cardiff in the week but they couldn't build on the momentum of Michael Dawson's goal and certainly never achieved total control.

If only they'd purchased Charlie Austin when they had the chance.
