From reserve to Premier League winner in less than two years is the fate, make that joy, for ex- QPR defender Danny Simpson.

And the player that replaced him at Loftus Road in August 2014? Mauricio Isla is yet on another loan from parent club Juventus - this time to Marseille, after failing to cut it at Loftus Road last season.

Harry Redknapp was the manager who let Simpson go, and when asked in October 2014 if he had made a mistake, suggested his lack of games for Leicester at the time was ample justification.

“Danny’s not playing at Leicester is he? Danny was a good lad and did a good job here, but Nedum Onuoha can play right-back in a four for me,” the gaffer said. “There’s no problem there. We’re okay.”

Rangers were relegated as every fan knows, and the club have used several options at right-back since that including Onuoha, James Perch and Darnell Furlong to plug the gap left by Simpson.

Isla was brought in on a season-long loan from Juventus after Redknapp made it clear he wanted to use a 3-5-2 formation – a system the manager tried to introduce last season without success.

“It’s been a problem for him in so much as he’s a wing-back. He’s played right wing-back for Chile and Juventus,” Redknapp added at the time.

“I brought him here to play right wing-back, a couple of results didn’t go our way early on and then suddenly people are saying ‘it’s the system’.

“So we went to a four [at the back] and he’s not quite the same player in a four as he is in a five.”
