Jose Mourinho has signalled his intention to keep Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Chelsea next season and give him the chance to stake a claim for a first-team place - but will he still be at Stamford Bridge in five years’ time?

The Blues this month booked their spot in this season’s FA Youth Cup final for the fourth year in a row and will face either Manchester City or Leicester for the right to retain the crown they won last season.

Despite a flourishing youth setup, Chelsea are still waiting for their first academy graduate to truly make a mark on the squad since John Terry burst onto the scene and led the Blues to glory.

However, five years can be a long time in football. One newspaper received special coverage last year after their England team for World Cup 2014 – predicted in 2007 – was very much miss rather than hit, with not one of their starting 11 making it to Brazil.

Can Loftus-Cheek or any of Chelsea’s other young guns break into Mourinho’s plans in the next few seasons?

We’ve taken a closer look at the prospects making inroads and the emerging talents in the current squad to see what the team will look like in 2020 and have called upon a true expert in the form of Twitter fountain of knowledge, @ChelseaYouth, to offer his proposed line-up.

You can also have your say with our team selector, which assumes the ages of players if a game was to be played between Chelsea and Arsenal on April 1, 2020, and be sure to leave your comments, and future teams, at the bottom.

Note: We are not allowed to add any new players to the squad – or a 32-year-old Lionel Messi would be there – and we will adopt Mourinho’s preferred formation.

Glimpse into the future: Matt Lewis' predicted Chelsea line-up in 2020

I have chosen five of Mourinho’s current first-team regulars for my prediction of how the Blues could line-up in 2020.

Thibaut Courtois, Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Oscar and Eden Hazard are all among the boss’ favourites this term and are at the right age to command a place for years to come.

Only Cahill, 34 at the time of this future fixture, will arguably have put his best years behind him and be entering the twilight of his career.

However, my decision to include the England man is based on the continued excellence of Terry this season who shows age is no barrier to success.

Jay Dasilva, who will be 21 in the year 2020, would be the youngest member of my starting XI but is on course for stardom if he continues to impress.

Nathan Ake, who has just been loaned to Reading in the present day, may well challenge him for a spot.

Loftus-Cheek is already on the verge of making the grade so should be ready for a full campaign by this point.

Up top, I’ve gone for a 22-year-old Dominic Solanke ahead of an ageing 31-year-old Diego Costa, whose delicate hamstrings might hamper him in five years’ time.

Prediction: Here's @ChelseaYouth's Blues team for the year 2020

I largely agree with Matt’s proposed team but might be inclined to make one or two alterations.

If we were doing this in the spring of 2013 Nathaniel Chalobah would be a nailed-on certainty after flourishing in the Championship for Watford but his stock has dropped for reasons not really in his control, and people have foolishly rather passed him over for the next big thing in Loftus-Cheek.

Facts remain that Chalobah is a 20-year-old player with fabulous technique and versatility and no shortage of physical traits to endear him to his manager.

It's important to isolate the player from the situation and realise that playing for Nottingham Forest or Reading is not the same as playing for Chelsea, in both a positive and a negative regard. He should be at his peak in his mid-20s and a potential captaincy candidate to boot.

I'm throwing Bertrand Traore into the mix over Jeremie Boga simply because as a teenager scoring goals in a respectable development league despite relatively scarce experience in formative development football, his current achievements not only warrant great attention but suggest much, much more is yet to come.

And I’ve plumped for Solanke over Patrick Bamford in attack because he's got a few more years on his side and has a Chelsea appearance to his name.

Bamford's goalscoring record in the Championship is as impressive as any other player but there's a nagging feeling he'll not get a chance and, with plenty of suitors around, he could be impressing elsewhere in 2020.

Solanke, meanwhile, will be 23 and ready to thrive if he's able to continue his development.

Like Brown, he has one or two areas to clean up technically but he's making really good progress in his work as a lone forward - it helps having Costa and Didier Drogba around as models to learn from - and there may not be a better penalty-box finisher of his age in Europe; he's that clinical.
