Match-winning striker Will Grigg gave the travelling Brentford fans a glimpse of what’s to come with a match-winning display at Notts County on Saturday.

The Northern Ireland international’s cool finish sealed the points in a hard-fought clash with the bottom-of-the-table Magpies.

But he was keen to sing the praises of his team-mates who he believes make the job of whoever is selected that much easier.

“To be honest we have such good players here that we always know we are going to create chances and will be hard to beat at the back,” he said.

“If that stays the same then we will always look like scoring and keeping clean sheets and that is the secret to winning games.”

Grigg was hailed “outstanding” by Bees boss Uwe Rosler after an encounter made potentially hazardous by the arrival of former QPR midfielder Shaun Derry to the Meadow Lane hot seat.

Grigg, whose season has been stop start due to calls up and injury, said: “Hopefully the fans who were here saw a lot more of what I’m about.

“It wasn’t an easy game as County were lively in spells, but in the second half particularly we could have added to the scoreline."

His goal on the stroke of half time was a typical striker’s finish. Cool under pressure and running into the right channel.

Grigg said: ”I knew Toumani would play me in but the ball held up a little and stuck under me feet so I waited until it caught me up and just passed it in.”

The forward, who wormed his way ahead of County’s defenders as the solo target man all afternoon, almost made it two with around 10 minutes left.

He latched onto a slide rule George Saville through ball and fired in an instinctive drive which the keeper blocked at point blank range.

“I was a bit disappointed I didn’t finish the game off there, but by that stage it was not a pretty game and that is where our defence and midfield really dug in to see us over the line,” he said.

“I really enjoy playing on the shoulder of the last man because defences find it unsettling. I’d like to think that now I have two goals in two games that my season can really kick on from here.”

The fans certainly believe he has turned the corner now, as chants of “Grigg will tear you apart again “rang out from the healthy away following testified.

He added: “Chances like the second sum it up really. When you have players like George Saville and the rest of them in your side you will always create. It’s just up to us to finish.”
