Clint Dempsey predicts fans will see a team transformed when Fulham play Manchester United in their FA Cup quarter-final - and says the way in which they were brushed aside at Old Trafford has left them eager to make amends.

Dempsey was on target in Tuesday night's 2-1 win over Swansea City in a fifth round replay at Craven Cottage which earned the Whites another tilt at the Red Devils next Saturday - just a few weeks after a 3-0 drubbing in Manchester.

He believes it will be an entirely different match down by the Thames - where the Whites have lost only once in 14 league and cup matches and won eight of their 12 league games.

"Going to Manchester United and not performing well left a bad taste in everybody's mouth," the midfielder told the Gazette.

"I think the formation at Craven Cottage will be different. We're not going to sit and play 4-5-1. That was a new formation we tried at their place, which we didn't perform well.

"At home we're definitely not going to play like that, we're going to be more adventurous and get at them.

"I think we can make something out of it and get to the semi-finals.

"We know we have our work cut out playing United, but Portsmouth did it last season beating United - so who's to say we can't?"

Dempsey added: "The FA Cup has so much tradition and history, and it's great to be a part of it.

"It's something we have a chance to win, because there's no way we're going to win the Premiership. We're thinking along those lines and need to push as far as we can."

It will be a daunting task with United in such contemptuous form and gunning for an unprecedented quadruple of trophies. But there was no sign that Fulham viewed the prospect of another clash with United as a pointless exercise.

They looked determined to make progress and Swansea played their part as the magic of the FA Cup was sprinkled generously on Tuesday night.

The atmosphere was helped by a mini-invading force from south Wales who roared their boys on through the night. Roberto Martinez's team started well, playing their trademark neat passing football, but Fulham settled and began creating chances, with Brede Hangeland's thumping header cannoning off the crossbar in the first half.

Swansea started the secondhalf with a bang when, on 46 minutes, Jason Scotland drilled a shot past Mark Schwarzer.

However, Fulham upped the tempo and began to press, peppering Swansea's goal with shots. But Dorus De Vries put on a goalkeeping clinic to single-handedly keep Roy Hodgson's men at bay.

The breakthrough came on 77 minutes when Dempsey headed Simon Davies' cross to level the scores, and on 81 minutes the tie with United was secured when Bobby Zamora rose high and powered home his fourth goal of the season from another excellent Davies delivery - adding to the one he got against West Brom on Sunday which ended his Premier League goal drought.

Dempsey believes Zamora's contribution will only get stronger now he has found the way to goal again.

"Bobby's on a wave right now, but that's the way goalscorers are - a lot of them score in spurts," the USA midfielder said.

"He's a player that works hard for us, does a good job of holding the ball up and now he's starting to show his quality in front of goal.

"As for the team, we're trying to work hard to pressurise and impose our game on teams. That's how we create a lot of chances for ourselves.

"Against Swansea we also showed we could come from behind, and I thought we put in a good performance."
