The reward for a fine season in the face of adversity is an England U21 call-up for Marcus Bettinelli and Cauley Woodrow.

The Fulham pair have been named this morning in the preliminary England Under-21 squad for the upcoming European Championship in the Czech Republic.

Manager Gareth Southgate has named an initial 27-man party, but will whittle it down to 23 for the summer tournament which kicks off on June 17.

Celebration time: Marcus Bettinelli

Bettinelli has been linked with a move to Chelsea, but is already talking an extended contract with the Whites, while striker Woodrow admits it's been a year to remember (see video).

Last season, he was struggling to get games with League Two Southend on loan, but then made his Premier League debut before swapping striker duties with Ross McCormack, Hugo Rodallega and Matt Smith in a struggling Championship campaign.

Attempt: Cauley Woodrow takes aim

He said: “Southend was just about getting experience and it was good for me.

"I played a few games and scored a few goals.

“When I was recalled I and to get my mind set on playing Premier League. It’s been a good year, but I’m still developing and hope I can go on from there.”

England’s final warm-up match will see them face Belarus at Barnsley’s Oakwell on Thursday 11th June, in preparation for their Group Stage fixtures against Portugal, Sweden and Italy.
