Purist football reigned supreme at Brentford on Friday as Fulham passed for fun - especially in the first half.

But boss Slavisa Jokanvoic insists his squad is still edging towards the place he wants them to be.

Whites dominated the first 45 minutes of the live TV game with a shot count of 10-0 against a stung Bees.

Defence was more in demand as the home side rallied in the second period. But a late Tom Cairney goal, to back up the first-half push over the line from Sone Aluko, made it six points out of six in the last two games.

The icing was a second clean sheet and seven goals in back-to-back victories.

Hark back to last season, when Whites had the third-worst defence in the Championship, and Jokanovic even allowed himself a rare punch-the-air celebration at Griffin Park.

As he concedes, Fulham don’t foul as much as they used to, but he still wants them to mix and match play when required.

And if that requires a thumping hoof out of defence when under the cosh – so be it.

There were a lot of games before this when drew and should have won; we lost when we should have got a point,” Joka said.

“We make less fouls in the competition; but have found a better balance.

“We have found possession but we haven’t mixed it enough.

“Sometimes we need to shoot the ball out the stadium or the long ball to relieve the pressure.

“Sometimes possession didn’t bring us what we want; but we have found a better balance.”
