He was once knocking them in a few miles down the road at Loftus Road and Griffin Park - but it was a rather more serene setting for Rowan Vine's latest goal on Saturday.

The veteran striker, who had two spells with both the Rs and the Bees, joined Hayes & Yeading at the age of 34 earlier this month and scored his first goal for them in his second game yesterday.

Vine bagged his new club's second equaliser in a 4-2 win over Thame United in the Southern League, playing a neat one-two before side-footing a volley over the visiting keeper.

Although he started out with Portsmouth, Vine first came to prominence with Brentford when he netted 13 goals in a year-long loan spell with the Bees in 2002-03.

Four years later, after spells with Luton Town and Birmingham City, Vine joined QPR on loan in October 2007, scoring four goals in 18 league games to earn a permanent £1m move three months later.

However, he did not manage to have the same impact as during his loan spell and managed just five goals in 51 league games for the Loftus Road side.

During this time, he arrived for a second loan spell at Brentford in 2010 but failed to make a single appearance in the six weeks he spent back at Griffin Park.

Vine then went north of the border to play for St Johnstone, Hibernian and Morton before drifting into non-league football back in England with the likes of Welling, Havant & Waterlooville, Basingstoke and Gosport.

He also played briefly for Hayes' near neighbours Southall last season, and if yesterday's cool finish for Hayes & Yeading is anything to go by, there may still be life in the old dog yet.
