Former Brentford manager Mark Waburton has become the first Englishman to take charge of Rangers, signing a three-year deal.

The 52-year-old took over at Griffin Park in December 2013 and guided the Bees to promotion from League One in his first six months.

Brentford then challenged for promotion to the Premier League but were beaten by Middlesbrough in the play-offs.

This was achieved despite the club announcing in February Warburton would leave the club at the end of the season after a disagreement with owner Matthew Benham over transfer policy.

He is joined there by David Weir, who was Warburton's number two at Griffin Park and the pair had been linked with Fulham before the ex-boss categorically denied it.

Rangers have been out of the top flight for three seasons now after their financial meltdown, winning back-to-back promotions to the second tier before losing in the play-offs last season and Warburton has been tasked with taking the Gers back to the top flight.

Brentford appointed Dutchman Marinus Dijkhuizen as his successor as they look to mount a challenge to win promotion to the top flight.
