Former Brentford player Chris Hughton praised the club for how far they have come after dumping them out of the FA Cup this afternoon.

Hughton, who was part of the last Bees side to play in the second tier of English football two decades ago, has just taken over in the Brighton & Hove Albion hot seat.

And his first act as Seagulls boss was to oversee his new side's 2-0 win at Griffin Park which saw Brentford fall at the first hurdle in this season's cup.

Hughton said: “The philosophy is definitely a bit different from when I was playing here. We were a powerful and direct team back then, but that's how that league was back then.

“I have been back to watch Brentford a few times, and they have now managed to blend the good football they play with getting results, and they are doing a great job.

“They are a good side, and they always look like at some stage they can carve you open. They play with a great philosophy, but there is always two sides to that.

“When you play expansive football like Brentford do there is always the opportunity to catch them on the break, and I felt we did that.

“But although the last few results have gone against them, Brentford have having a good season and we knew it would be difficult coming here today.”

Meanwhile, Bees boss Mark Warburton admitted his side should have been more clinical early on when they were on top.

He added: “We started with a good tempo and quality, missed a few chances, but then got slack at the back and started taking a a few liberties, which gave them a bit of hope.”
