Steve Holland has been confirmed as England's assistant manager.

Here, Press Association Sport examines the 46-year-old's coaching career.

PREMATURE RETIREMENT SET HOLLAND UP FOR COACHING

Holland rose through Derby's academy before injury curtailed his progress. Stints with Bury, Northwich Victoria and in Sweden came and went without any first-team action. So at the age of 21 he retired as a player, and opted for a move into coaching.

HOLLAND THE EARLY STARTER ALREADY BOASTS VAST EXPERIENCE

Holland remains one of the youngest recipients of the Football Association's full coaching licence, having gained the qualification aged just 22. Rising through the ranks at Crewe he became academy director before a stint as first-team coach led to his move to Chelsea. Few coaches in world football can boast a 24-year coaching career while still in their 40s.

Holland has been so valued by Chelsea as to have remained a fixture throughout all the club's managerial changes. He joined the Stamford Bridge set-up in 2009, leading the reserves to the Premier League Reserves title two years later. But then his elevation to first-team duties, as at different times coach and assistant manager, have yielded the 2012 FA Cup and Champions League, the 2013 Europa League - and the League Cup and Premier League double in 2015.

HONESTY PROVES HOLLAND'S BEST POLICY

Jose Mourinho's second stint at Chelsea ended with the Portuguese being sacked in December 2015. Holland stepped in as caretaker manager for one match before Guus Hiddink assumed an interim role until the end of the season. Holland earned extra respect from both Mourinho and Chelsea bosses by challenging the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss' thoughts and methods.

SOUTHGATE IS JUST HOLLAND'S LATEST FAN

Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafa Benitez, Jose Mourinho and more have all been left impressed by Holland's coaching acumen. And new England boss Gareth Southgate has come to the exact same conclusion. Holland joined Southgate's England Under-21s coaching staff three years ago, and now the pair are the bosses of the senior side.
