Chelsea's FA Cup dreams were smashed by an old haunt after Romelu Lukaku's brace ended the Blues' progression at Goodison Park.

Lukaku scored twice in the final twelve minutes to ensure a largely uneventful match exploded into life and did not provide a Quarter-Final replay.

Both Diego Costa and Gareth Barry were given their marching orders in the dying embers of the match, in a move suiting such a fiesty encounter.

And here are five things we learnt as Guus Hiddink's charges fell short in the final eight of the FA Cup.

Chelsea need the old Eden Hazard

Out of sorts: Eden Hazard

Hiddink made the decision to drop the Belgian winger after his poor performance during defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

His father has also come out and criticised Chelsea for overworking the winger who has been heavily linked with a move to Spain in summer.

In this cup tie, both sides lacked cutting edge in the final third, but the hosts produced it twice in the final 15 minutes to steal the cup win.

If Chelsea had Hazard available– the Premier League Player of the Year version – you feel that Hiddink's men would have breezed through to the semi-finals.

Blues' aggression almost worked wonders

Red: Diego Costa receives his first Chelsea red card

The Blues played the first half without much attacking swagger, but the Dutchman's side were unafraid to stick the boot in to their opponents.

The Merseysiders struggled to play their natural game as the Blues got under their skin, and subsequently were drawn into a game of attrition in the opening 45 minutes.

It meant that as the game was very static, the hosts could not get on top early on – which provided the Blues with a foundation to build on, until the late red card to Costa.

Set piece woe needs to be fixed

Keep your head: Ramiro Funes Mori heads just over the bar for the hosts

The visitors were beaten time and time again by set pieces and, in particular, Ramiro Funes Mori.

The Argentinian defender should have opened the scoring for Everton when he rose highest in the opening exchanges of the second half, only to lob his header over the bar.

Chelsea continued to struggle from corners, generally losing the first header. Hiddink's men will know that they must improve to enjoy a successful end to the season.

Romelu Lukaku should not have left the club

Matchwinner: Romelu Lukaku

Many fans will not need telling twice, and it is not the first time Lukaku has come back to haunt his former club.

The big, powerful Belgian provided the lethal touch when it mattered, and Chelsea have been lacking such clinical finishing for the majority of the season.

Former manager Jose Mourinho decided he was not good enough to remain at the club, but the 22-year-old striker has proved he can make it at the top.

Premier League consolation is all that remains

Premier League hopes: Chelsea's season has effectively been ended

Hiddink said in his Friday press conference that Chelsea could not afford to take their eyes off the Premier League table – but now that is all they have left.

The Dutchman's team selection implies that the Blues were very much hopeful of a Wembley appearance to end a largely frustrating season at Stamford Bridge.

But now that they have fallen short, Chelsea have no choice but to try and haul themselves as high up the Premier League as possible, despite being entrenched firmly in mid-table.
