Jose Mourinho insists Romelu Lukaku has nothing to prove to him as the Belgian prepares to make his Stamford Bridge return on Wednesday.

The Special One sanctioned the £28million sale of the striker to Everton in the summer following a successful loan spell at Goodison Park.

Lukaku joined Chelsea from Anderlecht for £18m in August 2011 but played only 15 games for the club before the Stamford Bridge hierarchy decided to cash in on their investment.

It was yet another example of the Blues making a quick profit on a player as the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Juan Mata and most recently Andre Schurrle have come and gone.

Chelsea have raked in the transfer fees to help them comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and Lukaku’s move to Everton was a small part of a grand plan.

Since moving to Merseyside permanently, Lukaku has scored 10 times in 32 appearances and Mourinho think he is proving himself to be a top player in the Premier League.

Mourinho said: "I think he proves every weekend that he is a good player. He has nothing to prove to us. Nobody has doubts at Chelsea that he's a good player.

"We know Romelu is a good player. (Andre) Schurrle is a good player, (Kevin) de Bruyne is a good player, (Juan) Mata is a good player.

"They are good. We don't sell garbage. We sell top players.

"We sell top players, we get top fees. [If we don’t get] top fees we don't sell them, we keep them.

"That's football, that's life, that's market. The player wishes sometimes to be in clubs where they become clearly the first option. That's football, that's life.

"If he's happy, that's good. He wanted to play all the time."

Cesc Fabregas will return to the Chelsea squad for the visit of Everton but fellow Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel has been ruled out.

The Toffees will welcome back goalkeeper Tim Howard for the midweek trip to Stamford Bridge.

However, Aiden McGeady is definitely out and question marks remain over the fitness of Leighton Baines and James McCarthy.
