Michel Platini is the greatest goalscorer in European Championship history.

The former France midfielder has scored more goals, nine, than any player.

Amazingly, those goals came at a rate of one every 53 minutes.

No player to have played at least 270 minutes of European Championship football, the equivalent of three matches, has scored more frequently.

Former Aston Villa striker Savo Milošević has the next best minutes per goal ratio for those to have played at least 270 minutes with one every 62 minutes.

Milan Baros scored one every 77 minutes, Marco van Basten scored one every 78 minutes and David Villa one every 84 minutes.

Removing the minimum amount of game time though throws up some interesting results.

František Veselý has only played two minutes of European Championship football. That was all he needed though to get onto the scoresheet and help send Czechoslovakia to the 1976 final against West Germany.

Juan Mata has only played for three minutes in the Euros - for Spain in their triumphant Euro 2012 campaign. He came on as a late substitute against Italy in the 87th minutes of the final and scored a minute later.

The closest player to Platini’s record of nine goals is England’s own Alan Shearer.

The former Blackburn and Newcastle striker scored seven goals in the Euros at a rate of one every 109 minutes of play.

However, three players going to France this summer have a decent chance of surpassing Shearer and breaking Platini’s record.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is just three behind him on six goals. Cristiano Ronaldo is also on six while Wayne Rooney is on five.
