Manager Ray Duffy admits it will be emotional occasion when his Hanwell Town side take on Harrow Borough in the Middlesex Senior Cup final tomorrow.

Not only will it be Duffy's last game in the Hanwell hot seat, but he will be trying to get the better of a side he spent six years playing for in the 1980s.

Duffy will step down after leading Hanwell to their highest ever league finish (seventh in Southern One Central), and admits a county cup win would cap it off nicely.

He said: “I suppose it's quite ironic we're playing Harrow in out last game as both myself and my assistant, Mark Adams, played for Harrow for many years, and we still know a lot of people there.

Goal machine: Striker Bill Healey will be key to Hanwell Town's hopes

“It's been a great time being back at Hanwell, and we have done ever so well in the three years we have been back, but we felt we have taken the club as far as we can.

“A few players are moving on for various reasons, and we didn't feel we could rebuild the squad again like we have done before.

“We've had a brilliant committee at Hanwell who will be life-long friends, so we reached the decision with a tinge of sadness, but there was no animosity, and a cup win would be the perfect finish.”

The last time Hanwell made it into the Southern League nine years ago they came straight back down, so just keeping them up was an achievement, but Duffy is almost disappointed they didn't do more.

Red Army: Standing between Hanwell and the trophy will be Harrow Borough

He added: “We had actually targeted the play-offs. We knew we had a good squad because we only lost one game the previous season. You set these targets but you never know what you will come up against. However, we beat Bedworth, who won the play-offs, comfortably home and away.

“You're up against some big budgets, while ours was zero, and in the end the squad just wasn't big enough to get over the line. But hopefully the core of players who stay will give the new manager something to build on.

“I've had two spells in charge of Hanwell, and they are the only club I've managed. I wouldn't rule out taking another job if something interesting came up, but it's not like I'm going out throwing my CV around.”

The Middlesex Senior Cup final will take place at 3pm tomorrow (May 9) at Hampton & Richmond Borough FC.
