Dons Beast Bayo Akinfenwa says he has broad enough shoulders to take the flak for the slow start to his AFC Wimbledon career.

Akinfenwa has turned Beast Mode on by netting seven goals in his last six outings but he had to wait eight matches before opening his account with a brace against Burton last month.

He scored another double in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Bury and boss Neal Ardley said afterwards that he must accept some of the responsibility for Akinfenwa’s long wait.

Ardley explained he had to go back and trawl through Wimbledon matchday statistics to work out how to incorporate the powerhouse forward into his system.

“I think that’s just gaffer being gaffer,” Akinfenwa said.

“It’s not taking the blame, I think it’s just that it takes time to bed into a new team with lots of new players.

Boss: Neal Ardley says he should shoulder some of the blame for Akinfenwa's slow start

“Gaffer knew how I play but I think when you’ve got so many new players everyone expresses themselves and as time goes on you start realising how each other plays.

“The Burton game was where it clicked for me.

“You put ball in the box and defences couldn’t handle that. I wouldn’t say it was the gaffer’s fault at all.

Power: Akinfenwa in action with Bury's Kelvin Etuhu and Tom Soares

“It takes time and strikers will tell you that once you get one they start flowing. When you’re hot, you’re hot and when you’re not, you’re not.

“Don’t get too uptight when things aren’t going for you. It’s like buses. Don’t let it affect you mentally, I think that’s the most important thing.

“I was putting in performances before and it wasn’t going in. As a striker you’re judged on goals, so I won’t say it wasn’t at the back of my mind, but not enough to affect me.”

Beast: Bury couldn't handle the power of Akinfenwa

Seven goals in six games is a fantastic return for the new Dons goal-getter but Akinfenwa says he went through an even hotter scoring streak at Northampton Town.

“I think at Northampton I went through a stage where I had a better scoring ratio than this but it’s nice,” he added. “I started slow in front of goal, not scoring, but to start scoring now is nice.

“Most importantly it tops off a great week for AFC with a win in midweek and then again today [Saturday]. All in all, it’s been a good week.”
