Diego Costa has been banned for three matches after being found guilty of violent conduct, despite the Chelsea man denying the charge.

The striker clashed with Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny in the 43rd minute of the Blues' 2-0 win over Arsenal and, in the resulting melee, Gabriel was sent off.

The Gunners defender had his red card overturned, incredibly because the kick he aimed at the striker failed to make contact, and the decisions made by the governing body are likely to infuriate manager Jose Mourinho.

An FA statement read: "An FA charge against Diego Costa for violent conduct not seen by the match officials but caught on video has been found proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

"The Chelsea forward will, therefore, serve the standard penalty of a three-match suspension with immediate effect.

"The charge, which the player denied, was in relation to an incident involving Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny in the 43rd minute of the game on Saturday (19 September 2015)."

Costa will miss the Capital One Cup trip to Walsall tomorrow, although he was set to be given the night off, the Blues' trip to Newcastle and home game with Southampton. He can play in their Champions League tie at FC Porto.

Chelsea and Arsenal will find out on Thursday whether they face sanctions over failing to control their players in the contest.
