They already call him Drogs in the Uxbridge dressing-room because of the resemblance to former Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

However, Reds new-boy Melford Simpson revealed he has also been mistaken for an Olympic gold medallist.

The comparisons with Drogba are understandable given the sheer presence of the striker’s massive frame and the look-a-like trademark short dreadlocks.

Yet when he was out in London recently, Simpson admits a couple mistook him for the super-heavyweight champion from Sydney 2000, Harlesden-born Audley Harrison.

Again the mistake is understandable given his size which is enough to intimidate the most robust of defenders.

However, Simpson is not flattered by the latter comparison.

He said: “I think they were tourists, but I’m not happy with that as I don’t consider Harrison to be much of a fighter.

“Drogs [Drogba] though is a role model for me as I consider myself to be a similar type of striker.”

Simpson was persuaded by fellow red and long-standing friend Craig Tomkins to join Uxbridge back in pre-season, but subsequently decided to try his luck in the US.

Those trials came to nothing, so the front-man spent time playing in the national league in his native Jamaica to feed his dream of eventually turning out for the ‘Reggae Boys’.

He returned a month or so ago, but had to wait for international clearance, so acknowledges there will be a certain amount of ‘ring rust’.

“I’m not match fit yet, but I know what I can bring to the team in terms of presence, hold-up play and my share of goals once I get my sharpness.”

“Hopefully I can use that to bring us up the table a bit.”

Simpson was forced to take a view from the subs bench as the Reds recorded a first Southern Division One Central win of 2014 at basement boys Ashford Town Middlesex on Saturday.

Matt Woods put the horror of Tuesday’s red card in defeat to Barton behind him in emphatic style with a superb hat-trick with Craige Tomkins also on target from the penalty spot.

The reserves were 11-2 winners over Chessington & Hook United where Phil Oushor and Jake Jenkins bagged hat-tricks.

Elsewhere in Southern Division One Central on Saturday, AFC Hayes who were held to a goalless draw by Marlow.

They were due to host Egham Town last night (Tuesday), who dented Northwood’s play-off hopes at the weekend with a 1-0 win at Chestnut Avenue.
