Lee Carsley was forthright after Brentford were beaten 2-0 by Derby.

The Bees were not at the races, especially for the first 45 minutes and the Rams eased to a comfortable victory.

Below are the key comments from Carsley's post- match press conference.

On the game

The last time I sat here I'd been sold. It wasn't an easier afternoon. It wasn't easier today. It was a tough one, especially the first 15-20 minutes, we looked nervous and edgy and making mistakes. It's apparent when you're lacking in confidence. We changed the formation and I'm not sure whether that worked in the first half. Coming in at 2-0 down was a tough one to take. The second half was a good reaction. We made tactical changes which helped the players and finished the game strongly. We huffed and puffed in the second half but we're nowhere near what we're going to be like.

On what is going wrong

Ultimately, it is down to confidence. The fact we've signed a few players and we're trying to integrate them into the team which is difficult. It's hard enough moving house, country, language, style of football. They need time and we need to protect them as well. I don't think I did Andy (Gogia) any favours today by throwing him straight in. He'd have been better off coming on as a sub.

On putting it right

It's still early days in that respect. I need to build the confidence of the players, try and make them fitter and stronger. We need some physicality in the team. Derby have some big players in there with pace. We need to have the players back. It made a difference when Hofmann came on.

On half-time talks

I'm calm. I'm really calm. I've had a manager screaming in your face. It's the opposite with me. If I had someone doing that to me I'd switch off. I could have made myself feel better at half-time but I wouldn't have helped the team. I need to help them along with Paul and Flemming.
