Billy McKinlay has been installed as the new bookies’ favourite to get the Fulham job just days after recommending Kit Symons for the post.
McKinlay today left his position as manager of Championship rivals Watford after only eight days in charge at Vicarage Road.
His departure now sees the Hornets searching for their fourth boss in 37 days.
Fulham are also on the lookout for a new boss following the club’s sacking of Felix Magath and McKinlay’s Craven Cottage connections have made him the bookies’ choice.
McKinlay spent nine years at Craven Cottage as a coach under Lawrie Sanchez, Roy Hodgson and Martin Jol before becoming Northern Ireland assistant manager in 2012.
Last Friday the former Watford chief gave his backing to current Whites caretaker Symons to be given the job on a permanent basis.
“I was at Fulham’s 4-0 win against Bolton [on Wednesday] and they were outstanding,” McKinlay said last week.
“I think Kit is making a very good case for the job and I don’t see any reason why, if he continues like that, they would look anywhere else.”
