Dean Smith wants his Brentford side to play with a higher tempo and knows that when they do so, they look much better.

Bees fans were frustrated by the pedestrian and direct way their team were playing against Cardiff and produced a similar display when they were beaten 5-0 by Saturday's opponents Norwich.

When Brentford started moving the ball quicker they caused problems to the Bluebirds' defence but there were occasions where they maintained a slow tempo.

And Smith was keen to point out that Neil Warnock's side did everything they could to slow the game down, especially after getting in front.

He said: “Cardiff came to stop us playing. If you look at every free kick we got, they picked the ball up to stop us. The opportunity Lasse (Vibe) had in the first five minutes was where we moved the ball quickly.”

Smith revealed that confidence in the camp remains fragile and the Bees were guilty of playing into Cardiff's hands after falling behind and this affected decision making.

He added: “I felt we played into their hands at times after they scored. We lost a bit of confidence. The fans wanted to get forward quicker and the players made poor decisions.”
