Brentford head coach Dean Smith is, naturally, delighted to see the Bees move one step closer to building their new Lionel Road home.

The club received a boost this week in their compulsory purchase order request had been approved by the government.

While there is still some way to go before the first bricks can be laid, Smith is excited by the development.

He said: “I've been very aware of it and I think the project is the one that can move the club forward.

“I love Griffin Park; it's tight and it's got history and a great atmosphere but for the club to move forward we need an all-purpose ground that can bring in more finances.”

Dean Smith makes a point

Brentford struggle in relation to a number of their Championship rivals for non-matchday income due to the facilities Griffin Park has.

And Smith knows that the chance to bring in alternative revenues will only benefit the budget for his department.

He added: “A lot of clubs have done it and benefited. Walsall were one of the first to have a new stadium. I played in the opening of the Bescot.

“Opening a new stadium brings in a lot of benefits from marketing, conferences and you can earn more than what you do on a Saturday. That's what any football club needs.”
