Dean Smith paid tribute to Brentford's character after they came from 1-0 and 2-1 down to claim a 3-2 win at MK Dons.

Ryan Seager had put the Buckinghamshire side 1-0 up early on before Neal Maupay opened his account.

The MK forward capitalised on a misplaced backpass from Tom Field to Luke Daniels to restore the lead.

Ollie Watkins then found the net to equalise again before Florian Jozefzoon finished a fine Brentford move to seal the win.

Smith said: “We showed a bit of resilience to get the results. I told the players that I wasn't bothered about results in pre-season but I'd still like to see them win 10-2.

“They're tough games. Six players got their first 90 minutes with the exception of Ryan Woods and Luke Daniels who got them against Oxford.

“One of the disappointing things in the first half was we made mistakes and it was our reactions to the mistakes.

“Players will make mistakes; it's what we do next. More people need to help each other out. It was more of a team performance.”

That was typified by Field. He was below the standards he'd expect from himself in the first half, but came back strong after the break to lift the Bees to victory.

Smith added: “He had a struggle for 45 minutes but was excellent in the second 45. You come through the hard times and he did that today.”

The head coach was also delighted that Watkins and Maupay got off the mark in front of goal with the Frenchman scoring a poachers effort and the former Exeter man firing home after a well worked move.

Smith explained: “I thought the two of them did really well. Neal's learning what we're about but he's shown an all-round good display.

“He's got strength and fight in him. Ollie looks a terrific prospect for us. He's a ball carrier and he has the physique as well. I'm really pleased with the recruitment side.”

After making 10 changes from the side that drew with Southampton, it leaves Smith with a selection headache ahead of Brentford's season opener against Sheffield United.

He admitted: “The hardest thing will be picking 18 players as I'd be leaving talented players out. It'll be hard getting it to 11. That's what I'm paid to do so that's what I'll do it.”
