Dean Smith believes John Swift's England U21 call-up reflects well on how Brentford look after and develop players on loan from Premier League clubs.

The midfielder has been called up for the young Lions' European Championship qualifier with Switzerland on Saturday.

The Chelsea loanee has come under fire in recent weeks and was axed from the squad that lost 1-0 to Blackburn after a social media post ired sections of the support.

Smith, though, is delighted to see the young midfielder called up for international duty.

He explained: “I think it's good for Brentford, John Swift and Chelsea as well. It shows the clubs trust us with their players.

“The style of football that we're playing suits a lot of Premier League clubs. It can be a rollercoaster for young players. They play some really good games and some are not so good. We have to help them with their development.”

The 20-year-old has made 26 appearances for the Bees, scoring on six occasions.
