Brentford are still in the market for Ian Pearce and Mark Phillips as the race to replace centre-back Matt Heywood hots up.

With nine days until the new season kicks off,Bees boss Andy Scott wants to have his squad complete before the opening day trip to Bury next Saturday.

And although he insists he won't be rushed into a decision, Scott conceded the line-up in his side's final friendly at Woking on Saturday will be near enough his side for the Gigg Lane trip.

But it remains to be seen if a deal for trialists Pearce or Phillips will be wrapped up by then, or if they will drag into next week.

Scott said: "Ian Pearce is still an option, but as with a player of his quality,he has other options elsewhere.

"However, we are still interested in him and he is keeping us abreast of the situation.

"I have also spoken to Mark Phillips this week about his situation and we may be able to sort something out with him.

"He came off with an ankle injury against Watford, but it's nothing serious.

"Ideally, I'd like to have my squad complete before the Bury game, but again, I won't be rushed into anything if it's not right.

"But Woking will be the nearest to my starting XI as possible, depending on injuries and knocks."

Another trialist, left/centre-back Brett Johnson, has been offered a contract after two weeks of talks with Scott.

The Bees boss added: "Brett's been made an offer and he's thinking it over.We hope to have an answer by the end of the week."

Scott also took another look at trialists Andre Boucard, Miles Mitchell-Coop, Justin Abel and Michael Antonio during Tuesday night's 2-0 win over Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The Bees boss will unveil his new skipper in time for the Woking game, adding: "There are several candidates for the job."

Kevin O'Connor,Adam Newton, Craig Pead, Alan Connell and Sam Wood have all worn the armband during pre-season, although Wood's stint was just a gesture in the game against his former side Bromley.
