Chelsea will make another move for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij in the January transfer window after reportedly seeing a £34million offer for the Dutchman rejected during the close-season.

The Holland central defender was heavily linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge in the summer as Blues boss Antonio Conte searched for defensive reinforcements, with David Luiz eventually returning to the club in a deadline-day deal from PSG.

Luiz could make his second Chelsea debut in Friday night's clash with Liverpool after captain John Terry suffered an ankle injury, but the Brazilian's arrival won't stop Conte from moving to bolster his backline.

Italian outlet Calciomercato claim Conte will go back to his homeland and renew his interest in De Vrij once the transfer window reopens in January.

The report suggests the 24-year-old is keen to remain in Serie A but Chelsea are refusing to take no for an answer and are keen to complete a mid-season deal to add to the existing options of Terry, Luiz, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and even Branislav Ivanovic despite doubts over his future.

De Vrij has already made three appearances for Lazio so far this season and scored in last weekend's 1-1 draw at Chievo.
