Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham is no reason for Blues fans to panic, insists David Luiz.

The west Londoners were well beaten at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night as Dele Alli inspired Spurs to victory with two headed goals, both from Christian Eriksen crosses.

That said, Chelsea’s lead at the top of the table remains a healthy five points after their Premier League record-equalling winning run of 13 games.

Another omen for the Blues is that the last time they won the title, they were well beaten at Tottenham in their first game of 2015.

Luiz then, believes there is no reason for any concern to come into play after a productive end to 2016.

“There is no reason to panic,” said the £30 million defender. “It is only January. In the Premier League the only important thing is to be top of the table in May. I never saw anyone win the title in February or March.”

North London has not been a happy hunting ground for Chelsea this season with the Blues losing to Arsenal prior to their winning run and Luiz will learn lessons from the loss at Spurs.

He said: “This is a good lesson for us. We totally changed things after that defeat and went on a long winning run.

“On Wednesday night we lost but we have to continue the same way, with our philosophy. We work hard every day as a team. Sometimes it’s not possible to win a match – Tottenham deserved to win.”

Resolute defending has been key to Chelsea’s form but Antonio Conte’s men have now conceded four goals in two games.

Luiz, though, takes it in his stride.

“I never saw one team win the League without conceding goals – this is impossible,” added the Brazilian. “Obviously it’s a good feeling for the defenders when we keep a clean sheet.”
