JOSE Bosingwa faces a race against time to be fit for Chelsea's clash with Aston Villa on New Year's Eve.

The Portuguese defender limped out of yesterday's draw against Fulham with a hamstring injury, with Paulo Ferreira replacing him at right-back.

And the 29-year-old will be assessed by the Chelsea medical staff ahead of the Stamford Bridge showdown with Villa.

Fellow defender Branislav Ivanovic has already been ruled out, while John Obi Mikel will also be missing.

Boss Andre Villas-Boas said: "Branislav Ivanovic will be back sooner than Mikel.

"We are looking at the Portsmouth game for Ivanovic and it is not impossible for Mikel either but it might be a bit too soon."
