Fresh reports have emerged claiming Chelsea will make Wembley their temporary home while expansion plans are carried out at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are looking to redevelop their SW6 home by increasing its capacity to around 60,000 and put them on a level playing field with Europe’s elite stadia.

Building work is anticipated to take around three years to complete and the Mirror suggest a deal to play at the home football is close to being agreed.

Should the move go ahead, it is anticipated Chelsea would start playing at Wembley from the start of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.

Twickenham had been considered as another potential option for the Blues but the national stadium is the preferred destination at a price of between £11million and £12million per year.

There are restrictions on the number of events allowed to be hosted at Wembley while at its full capacity but these are null and void if attendance is kept at no more than 50,800 per match.

The FA have been sounded out and have agreed in principle to the move and Premier League chief Richard Scudamore is happy for it to go ahead as long as the re-location adheres to regulations.

If planning permission is granted, the FA is expected to rubber-stamp the rental agreement and will look favourably on the application to the move.

Chelsea's plans for Stamford Bridge in pictures:

Chelsea have already unveiled their plans to turn the Bridge into a £500million “cathedral of sport” to fans and people living next to the ground in Fulham were shown drawings at a public exhibition.

Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have been commissioned by Blues owner Roman Abramovich to transform the west London ground into a 60,000-seater ground.

Estimates have priced the expansion works at £500million and will feature a three-tiered stack of terraces and is inspired by the design of Westminster Abbey.

Herzog has described his vision for the Bridge of having the feeling of “a castle, or a medieval walled village … something you wouldn’t find anywhere else” and features heavy brickwork and soaring vaults.
