Antonio Conte has revealed there is little chance of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso being thrown in at the deep end against Swansea.

The deadline day signings are clear to face Francesco Guidolin’s men at the Liberty Stadium after the Blues splashed the clash in the closing hours of the transfer window.

However, Conte wants to give the pair more time to settle into the swing of things at Chelsea before thrusting them into the firing line.

The Italian head coach said: "I think the new players need a bit of time, the chance to play at the start is not high.

“I’m happy because the players have come back fit and those who stayed behind at Cobham trained hard.

“We needed some defenders in this transfer market and arrived with Alonso and David Luiz. They are two good players who can improve our squad.

“It’s now important for them to work very hard and go into our idea of football.”

“When we take the decision about the players, we always take the decision together.

“I told you this market was very difficult to reach our target but the last minute there was a good situation for me and the club to improve the squad.

“For this reason we did it and invest in David. I’m very happy because we took a player with a great personality and great technique.

“I like the defenders to play football. David can improve in defensive situations but he’s a good guy, positive for the changing room. I’m pleased.

“I know David Luiz played sometimes in this position in midfield. In my mind now there isn’t this idea. He has to work with us like a centre-back.”

Chelsea have made an impressive start to the season under Conte by picking up three wins from their opening three Premier League fixtures.

The Blues also survived a scare against Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup to ensure the new Italian coach maintained his perfect start to life at the Stamford Bridge helm.
