Jose Mourinho is refusing to be drawn on who will be Chelsea's number one for the new season.

Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois expected to battle it out for the coveted shirt at Stamford Bridge next season.

Cech, injured towards the end of last season, made his first return to Chelsea action on Wednesday night.

Decision to make: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in Austria

The experienced shot-stopper and played the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 friendly draw with Austrians WAC RZ Pellets.

Mourinho now has a big decision to make but was full of praise for Cech after his comeback performance.

He said: “To test his shoulder the game gave us situations that we needed. My opinion is that he has completely recovered.”

Top keeper: Thibaut Courtois is ready to challenge Cech

But all that could change in the coming week, with Courtois expected to make his long-awaited debut at either Vitesse Arnhem on Wednesday, or Werder Bremen a week on Sunday.

At 22, the Belgian has long been schooled as a successor to Cech, 10 years his senior.

“My situation for the season is fantastic,” said the Blues' boss. “To have Petr Cech and Courtois is fantastic.

“I have the best young goalkeeper in the world. I have one of the top three, top five experienced goalkeepers in the world. For me and for Chelsea, the situation is perfect.

“One will play, and Chelsea are in safe hands for because they are both very good players.”

Cech has been practically unimpeachable as Chelsea's number one since making his full debut a decade ago.

New-boy: Chelsea's Filipe Luis in action

Back then, experienced Carlo Cudicini was the one who had to battle out pre-season with the young pretender.

Mourinho eventually picked the Czech international and Chelsea have never looked back.

“For the coach, when we don’t have the players we are in trouble,” said Mourinho. “When we have good players in numbers we are happy.

Captain: Chelsea's John Terry in action

“We have to make decisions, yes, but we are paid to make decisions.”

The dilemma raises the possibility that Cech could become the third automatic pick of recent seasons to be dropped from Chelsea's first choice XI, with Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole already having left the club this summer.

Cole's replacement, Filipe Luis, played an hour at left back in his pre-season Blues debut against the Austrians.

Young gun: Chelsea's Izzy Brown in action

Mourinho has indicated fellow new signings Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas will feature in Sunday's pre-season match in Slovenia against NK Olimpija Ljubljana.

Meanwhile, Lampard is set to be unveiled as a New York City player on Thursday.
