Chelsea are optimistic that striker Diego Costa will be fit to face Swansea City on Saturday.

Costa was pulled out of the Spain side to face Macedonia in the week, after picking up what was described as a 'minor' injury to his leg in the preceding international friendly against France.

But reports say the Blues believe he will be available for the visit of the Swans to Stamford Bridge on Saturday – but that a decision will be left until late in the day on whether he will feature.

The situation echoes that in the run-up to the Blues trip to Everton a fortnight ago, when it was reported early in the week that Costa had suffered a hamstring issue which could sideline him for weeks.

In the event, he played the full 90 minutes at Goodison Park, scoring twice – one goal at either extremity of the game.

Should Costa not be fit enough to start, both new signing Loic Remy and old favourite Didier Drogba are fit to play.

Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has spoken about the honour of being named England vice-captain this week.

The 28-year-old said: “Even just to pull on an England shirt and play for England is a huge honour, but to have the added bonus of being vice-captain is amazing.

“To have the armband in the last two games, even for the short time that it was, felt fantastic.”
