Chelsea's next signings would be The Killers if they could kick a ball as well they make records.

Manager Jose Mourinho was not as distressed as you might think to exit a competition his side won in the past, but reckoned Sunderland were gifted a way back when they should have been dead and buried.

Frank Lampard's opener was cancelled by Fabio Boroni and Ki Sung Yueng in the last two minutes of extra time, and chances missed came back to bite the Blues in a painful place, as the boss explained.

"We didn't come to lose but this was a competition where we were not so focused and not a priority to win," he said.

"But we played very well. The quality of possession was amazing. The story repeats of every match we lost; at Stoke, at Everton we never lost a match because we didn't play. We lost because we don't kill opponents - we give them life and it changes the truth of the result."

Mourinho brushed aside questions comparing his Chelsea side from his first coming, but reckoned this 2013 version was as good if not better in certain areas.

"In terms of quality and the way we build we are in front of the team that is always compared, but football is about results."
