JOSE Mourinho admits his team currently lack the necessary experience and personality to deal with adversity during matches.

Chelsea slipped to a shock 2-1 home to defeat to Basel in their Champions League opener – ruining Mourinho's return to the competition with his beloved Blues.

And the Portuguese said the team's collective reaction to the Basel equaliser showed weakness.

“I think the team probably is not a team with such a maturity and such a personality to face the difficult moments of the game,” Mourinho said.

“Against Everton, we play amazing, they score in the last minute of the first half and after that, you could feel the team was struggling a little bit, in spite of dominating the game.

“Today was a little the same. The team started with the responsibility of playing, pressing the opponent and trying to create and when the first negative moment arrived, the equaliser, the team shakes a little bit.”

Mourinho continued: “The only thing you can do is to work. We go home very sad, but tomorrow we have to go to training to prepare for the next match and believe in what you do.

“We have to stick together and try to get a result against Fulham [on Saturday] and in the next match in the Champions League, we have to recover these three points.”

The Blues boss concedes his team are under pressure to claw back points in the return in Switzerland if they are to regain control of the group.

“Normally you have to win the matches at home and get a few points away from home,” he said.

“Now, we must win the six points at home against Schalke and Steaua Bucharest, but we have also to win points away, so probably we have to go and win at Basel to compensate for the defeat today.”
