Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is still baffled why he was sent to the stands during Saturday’s 4-1 win over Cardiff.

Even as he celebrated a fine away win at Schalke in the Champions League, the Portuguese admitted that though he had read referee Anthony Taylor’s report he was none the wiser.

Mourinho spent the last 21 minutes sitting next to fans in Stamford Bridge's East Stand at the weekend, rather than exhorting his side to an even bigger win.

“I read the report the referee wrote and that it was fair and honest and it told exactly what happened,” he said.

“So when you can read the report, you can ask why I was sent off? I don’t understand why I was sent off.”

However, he was back on the touchline at Gelsenkirchen to celebrate a brace from Fernando Torres and a clincher from Eden Hazard, but ducked questions on whether his Spanish striker is back to the top of his game.

“Samuel (Eto’o) played very well the last game,” offered Mourinho. “Fernando played very well today. “I prefer to say that we have strikers that can work for the team and can also score goals, and Demba (Ba) plays with enough quality to succeed for us so I’m happy for them.”

Torres himself, making his 100 start in blue, was also delighted at his fitness levels.

He said: “The last few games I feel very well.

“Talking about fitness we can play internationals, we can play three days after, but we have many important games coming: Man City, Arsenal, and we need to be ready.”
