Chelsea boss Antonio Conte believes the reason why he had fewer injuries than most - his down to what he sees rather than what he reads on the stats sheet .

The Blues, who sit top of the Premier League, have had the luxury of a fully fit squad, barring a few exceptions, for the majority of the campaign. Whilst their title rivals have had to contend with stars missing due to injury.

Ahead of their clash with West Brom on Sunday Conte has slight concerns over Nemanja Matic and David Luiz, but says both could still feature at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian said he pays attention to the performance figures provided by his backroom team but feels he can assess the physical state of his players purely by watching them.

“The statistics are important to check during a game or training," he said.

"But I think the most important thing is for my eyes and it is important to look and see if a player is more tired than the other. If someone is lazy or not, then you can push.

“For sure I am pleased because in one season it’s very important to avoid muscular problems because they are very difficult.

“But to avoid these problems it is important to work and to have a mentally philosophy during training and to work with the players and medical staff and to try find the best solution to have less injuries.”

The former Juventus coach conceded that his team’s chances are enhanced if throughout the season if he is able to call upon each of his players at any given time.

He added: “The number of injuries is always important at the end of the season and to look at the statistics is important.

"Usually when you have any injuries you can lose key players during the season and it’s not good for the team.”

Chelsea welcomed Willian back to their squad for last weekend’s trip to Manchester City after injury had kept him out for over a month, but the winger provided an instant impact as he scored the second goal in a 3-1 win.
