A nightmare Champions League group for Chelsea would consist of Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Blues are in pot one for this evening's Champions League draw.

That means that they're guaranteed to miss out on last season's two Champions League finalists, Barcelona and Juventus, as well as German champions Bayern Munich.

Going on UEFA coefficients, the toughest team from pot two that they can draw are Real Madrid who are ranked first in all of Europe. With three of the teams in pot two being English, and therefore not being able to end up in Chelsea's group, that means that there's a one in five chance that the 10 times Champions League winners could be drawn with the Blues.

The highest ranked team Jose Mourinho's side could draw from pot three are last season's Europa League champions Sevilla, who are 19th. However, UEFA rules state that teams from the same country cannot draw one another in the group stages. Therefore Sevilla can't be drawn in Chelsea's group if it already has Real Madrid in there. The second highest ranked team in the group are Shakhtar Donetsk (22nd) who, being from Ukraine would be eligible to go into the group.

The highest ranked team in pot four are Borussia Monchengladbach (49th).

That group would give Chelsea a set of opponents with an average UEFA coefficient ranking of 24. That's a higher average rank than the toughest possible groups for Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal. Being in pot two the toughest overall UEFA coefficient rank that those three sides can be drawn against is 24.7 - Barcelona (3rd), Shakhtar Donetsk (22nd), Borussia Monchengladbach (49th).

So how about the easiest group Chelsea can hope for?

Happy: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is all smiles

The lowest ranked team in pot two are Manchester United (20th). However, because Chelsea can't draw another English club Bayer Leverkusen are the lowest ranked side that they can draw (15th).

Roma are the lowest ranked team in pot three (60th).

FC Astana are the lowest ranked team in pot four (170th) and could prove an interesting away day for fans willing to endure the six hour flight to the Kazakhstani capital.

This is an average ranking of 81.6, again that's higher than the average ranking of the easiest possible groups for Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

They could draw PSV (37th), Roma (60th) and Astana (170th), an average position of 89th.
