Cesc Fabregas brings qualities to Chelsea's midfield that even the legendary Frank Lampard couldn't, according to Cesar Azpilicueta.

Fabregas, a star performer in pre-season, is set to make his full debut on Monday night when the Blues kick off their Premier League campaign at Burnley.

He has hooked-up well with Diego Costa in a series of friendlies, and Azpilicueta says the ex-Barcelona man brings Chelsea something they simply didn't have before his arrival.

“I said before he came that we didn't have a player like him,” said the full-back of his countryman.

“He is a special player that sees the football very well. He arrives in scoring positions and it's great that we have the chance to have him this year with us.

“I'm very happy to see him here at Chelsea.”

On Tuesday he took on the role previously occupied by Lampard – acting as supplier to the front line, and turning up late in the box.

He seemed to strike an immediate understanding with Costa, who he knows from travels with the Spanish national side.

Asked about the value of Fabregas' Premier League experience over several years at Arsenal, Azpilicueta said: “Yes it's very important.

“He played for Barcelona and Arsenal, he has the experience at the top level in both teams.

“He was very young when he was in the Premier League and has the experience of that already.

“He is used to playing big, big games with the national team and Barcelona. It's great we have a chance to have him here.”
