Andreas Bjelland has been ruled out for the season after sustaining a serious knee injury, Brentford have confirmed.

The club's record signing sustained the injury in the Bees' 4-0 defeat to Oxford in the Capital One Cup.

The 27-year-old Danish international had suffered a groin injury against Stoke and was making his comeback against United when the injury occurred.

Brentford's head of medical Neil Greig told the club's official website: "Andreas unfortunately sustained a forced hyperextension injury to his left knee on Tuesday evening.

“It was clear from the outset that we would need to allow an appropriate period of time in order to establish an accurate diagnosis and prognosis, which is the process we have been following thus far.

"Disappointingly, the news from the last 48 hours is that Andreas will need to undergo surgery to repair a multi-ligament injury to his left knee.

Bad to worse: Brentford Manager Marinus Dijkhuizen gestures

“The consensus is that such a procedure will take, on average, around nine months to recover from, making his participation this season unlikely.

“This surgery will take place once the initial inflammation has settled and Andreas is ready to proceed.

"I'm sure that all Brentford fans will appreciate that the degree of detail that can be released following such an injury are restricted by both the wishes of the player and medical confidentiality, which are respected at all times, in this case and all others of a similar nature.

The injury is also likely to cost the Dane a chance to appear at Euro 2016, with his country in the battle for qualification with Albania and Portugal.

Bjelland joins Josh McEachran (broken foot) on the sidelines as well as Scott Hogan (knee), Lewis Macleod (hamstring) as the club's long term injury problems. Marcos Tebar is around a week away from returning to training after a hamstring injury.

Jota (ankle) is a doubt for Saturday's trip to Bristol City, while Alan Judge and Harlee Dean have shaken off illnesses.
