Brentford will have a light training session on their relaid pitch ahead of Saturday's game with Reading, with a Royals representative visiting the ground to assess the works.

The Bees were forced to relay their unsafe surface after just two competitive games, and had the embarrassment of postponing their game with Birmingham to do so.

And head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen is keen for players to get to grips with the new surface to remove any nagging doubts about the state of the Motz surface.

He said: “It's important after what happened in pre-season, the Ipswich game and the League Cup game and for the players to get the right mindset.

Awful: The Griffin Park pitch before being relaid

“Normally we don't train on the pitch a day in front but that's why we do it. They need confidence and know what suits them. It's good for the mindset.

He added: “It's a light session on Friday but maybe even lighter as we have to be aware of the pitch and the rain, although they say it's good for the pitch.

“That's why I visited the pitch on Tuesday. We were speaking to the guys laying it down. They said it'd be okay on Friday but not perfect.

“In the long term, it'll be perfect and it's much better than what it was.”

Resurface needed: The Griffin Park pitch

Dijkhuizen's home results have been a 2-2 draw with Ipswich as well as a disastrous 4-0 defeat to Oxford in the Capital One Cup and knows giving the Griffin Park faithful something to cheer about early on is important.

He said: “I want to get our first home win. Then we have seven points which is good considering the circumstances.

“Reading have sold out their allocation. I hope the other stands are full of Brentford fans. It's been difficult but there's a good spirit in the team. Hopefully they can join us and we can celebrate three points together.”
