A single goal saw Brentford crash out of the League Cup for the second year running to a League Two outfit.

The damage done by Ryan Harley's extra time winner was made worse by the sight of Alan McCormack limping off after just nine minutes with not a tackle in sight.

Bees can have no complaints at the manner of their exit.

The Grecians were no match for the slick play of the Championship side, but they wanted it more. And in a game of few chances, it only needed one to decided it.

Harley was played into the box by a fine piece of control from Brentford target Ollie Watkins and slid the ball past Jack Bonham and into the far corner.

Early doors, Josh Clarke teased his way down the wing, but Philip Hoffman wasn't alert to the cross and the ball hit his head rather than the other way round.

Bright: Josh Clarke

The nearest thing to drama in the first non-event 45 minutes, was the half chance Ryan Woods took as he swivelled and hit left-footed in the box only to see the effort chested away by Tom McCready on the line.

The applause requested for former Exeter number nine Adam Stansfield after nine minutes was dutifully observed by Bees fans as well as the Exeter faithful.

No sooner did it stop, so did McCormack.

There was no tackle on the midfielder, but the horrible suspicion of a calf strain saw him hobble to the sidelines and replaced by Ryan Woods.

Non-contract: Emmanuel Ledesma

Woods took another measured dig from distance that whistled past the right-hand post.

There was the strange sight of three Bees blocking keeper Bobby Olejnik's view on the line as the away side won a free-kick on 78 minutes, only to peel back onside to dovetail as the kick was taken.

New recruit Emmanuel Ledesma dinked the ball over the wall, but Olejnik was down smartly to his right to parry despite starting out blind. And that was that.

There wasn't quite the 11 changes from last season's League Cup debacle against Oxford - just the jolly eight from Saturday's opener as Bees made it clear again this is a competition that holds little interest for them.
