Brentford have stepped up their search for a new head coach ahead of the long winter run of games.

The Bees sacked Marinus Dijkhuizen and replaced him with Lee Carsley at the end of September after just eight league games.

The 41-year-old former midfielder has made it plain he doesn't want the job on a full time basis and was only in place until the end of the season.

Despite that, Carsley guided Brentford to four wins in October and won the manager of the month award. He is popular with the squad and several players have conveyed that they'd like him to stay on.

With the Bees having this weekend off for the international break, it appears the club are looking to make a permanent change at the top. Reports have suggested Dean Smith and Justin Edinburgh are candidates for the permanent role.

Head of Football Philosophy and Player Development Flemming Pedersen said: “When Lee told us it is only for a shorter period then we are looking.

“It is only natural. Even if he wants to continue, as a club, you're always looking for coaches, players and someone who can help develop a club.”

Pedersen has been impressed by what Carsley has done after the brief reign of Dijkhuizen and had sympathy for the Dutchman.

He added: “I would say it will always be little difficult for a foreign coach with communication. It'll take time for a foreign coach to learn a new culture.

“Lee has changed the intensity. He knows the English/British game.

“He just changed the intensity and the way he communicated with the players. I don't say one thing is better than another but you need to know about the culture.”

Pedersen works closely in football and had said Carsley would be welcome to change his mind and there were no doubts that the 41-year-old had done a great job.

He explained: “We work very closely. We are sitting in the same office and have meetings together.

“My job is to challenge everybody and I challenge Lee and ask him why is he doing things. He's doing a great job.

“In football, as in life, anything can happen. You can make a statement and the next day you can change.

“Lee can change his decision but he knows better than I do. He is definitely doing a great job.”
