Sam Saunders is aiming to be back in action by next month to help Brentford over the line in the race for promotion.

The Bees midfielder has been out since injuring his right knee in the win over Port Vale in January, having just won the League One Player of the Month award for December.

Saunders has since undergone keyhole surgery on the knee, and although frustrated with being sidelined, reckons his recovery is well on track.

He said: “It is going well and the knee is getting better. I was told four weeks post op, so hopefully I will be looking to return sometime in April.

“I am so eager to get back in, I have been kicking every ball from the sidelines. I will be back for the run in just when we need some fresh legs.”

Saunders moonlighted as a Sky summariser for the Bees' 1-0 win at Leyton Orient on Saturday, and told the Chronicle afterwards he was so proud of his team-mates' efforts.

He added: “It was horrible to watch as I was kicking every ball, knowing I couldn't do anything about it. But we were courageous and organised to a man – they were unbelievable.”
