David Button has sympathy for former club Charlton Athletic but he has no regrets about leaving The Valley to move to Brentford in 2013.

The former Tottenham man had a frustrating time in south east London, making just five league appearances for the Addicks.

Button then moved to Griffin Park to replace Simon Moore, who had joined Cardiff, and has established himself as the Bees' undisputed number one goalkeeper.

Since then, Charlton have suffered under the ownership of Roland Duchatelet with fans demanding that the Belgian sell the club.

Brentford, by and large, have been on an upwards trajectory since Button's move across London and he believes it proves that he made a great decision.

He said: “It's hard to say (what's going on at Charlton) from the outside looking in. It's a great club and it's a shame to see that going on. The fans aren't happy so hopefully the issues would get resolved.

“I've not spoken to anyone there. It was a frustrating year for me when I was there. I was glad to leave when I did and it's proven to be a great decision.”

Button knows the Addicks need the points more than Brentford on Saturday and knows his side must perform better than they did against Rotherham last weekend.

He added: “They will be desperate for points. It's strange when you come to the end of the season and everyone is playing for different things.

“We'll come up against some teams looking to get in the play-offs and the sides at the bottom are fighting for their lives. We've got to do better on Saturday.”
